DOT background check & drug test are required for applicants

Wisconsin Drug Testing Consortium assists employers with compliance

Completing a DOT background check & drug test is a requirement for all carriers and owner-operators that operate under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations. Wisconsin Drug Testing Consortium (WDTC) provides an array of services designed to meet those requirements.

The pre-employment DOT background check & drug test is an extensive process that many employers delegate to third party administrators. Owner-operators consortiums leverage the service offerings of WDTC for a variety of regulatory requirements.

A DOT background check & drug test includes the following:

Criminal check –While not a DOT requirement, most carriers conduct a criminal background check on applicants. A national criminal record search is the most common type of check, while state, county and federal district searches also are available.

Driving record check –The FMCSA requires that employers collect driving records from each state in which the applicant has been licensed in the past three years.

Medical certification –Applicants must receive certification by a professional medical examiner prior to employment. These certifications typically are valid for two years, though certain health conditions may require a driver to go through this process more frequently.

Drug check –Two drug-related checks are a requirement of employment per DOT regulations. The first is the standard pre-employment drug test in which a positive test prohibits employment. The second is a drug history check in which the applicant’s past history is investigated. This check determines whether the applicant has any previous violations for drug or alcohol use, and if so, the nature of those violations and whether the driver completed a substance abuse rehabilitation program.

Road test –Many employers require applicants to pass a road test even if they already hold a CDL.

WDTC offers DOT background check and drug test services for carriers and owner-operators consortiums as a third party administrator. Contact WDTC for assistance in completing these regulatory requirements at 888-784-8842.
